For the smoothest paint job finish sanding with 400 grit wet dry paper.
Leave the item for an hour or so then scour with steel wool or a metal brush removing the rust down to the metal.

Give it some 24 hours before you remove the metal and scrub it.
Prevention isn t always possible however especially if you.
Dust with baking soda it will stick to the damp areas making sure to cover all rusty areas.
Rub the metal item with salt and then squeeze the lemon juice on it.
Once done you can paint over rust.
Leave for a couple of hours and then use the lemon rind to scrub off the rust.
If cleaning a pan use a scouring pad rinse and towel dry.
Rinse the metal item and shake dry.
The combination of lemon and salt can also wash out rust.
Galvanized steel is designed not to rust so if you have a galvanized steel item that has rusted it means that the galvanization has worn off completely in those areas.
However if the rust stains are only affecting the surface of the paint you can probably scrub it off with a cloth and some liquid detergent or a vinegar and baking soda paste.
All you need to do is soak the metal in vinegar overnight.
Of course it is best to not let your metals get rusty at all.
Once done you can paint.
If necessary wash the surface to remove any chemical residues.
Once the rust is gone switch to a finer grit to smooth out the swirls and grooves caused by the coarse grit.
When the zinc is all gone this is when real rust sets in.
If the metal underneath the paint is rusted you ll need to remove the paint first and then apply a rust removing solution such as vinegar or a commercial rust remover.
